How to build a daily supplement routine

The best supplement routine is the one you actually keep. Here is how to build one that is simple and safe, and why the form of an ingredient matters as much as the dose.

1. Start with food, sleep and movement

Supplements add to a healthy lifestyle; they do not replace it. A varied diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein comes first, along with regular sleep and activity (see our guide to sleep, movement and recovery). The NHS has a clear overview of vitamins and minerals, and advises that adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day, and that everyone should consider a daily supplement in autumn and winter.

2. Read the label, then follow it

Every label tells you four things: the serving, how many times a day, when to take it, and the maximum daily dose. Do not exceed that dose, and check the allergens. Our product pages reproduce the full label for each formula, including the inactive ingredients.

3. Empty stomach or with food?

Follow the label. Several Abeytú Naturals formulas are labelled for an empty stomach: Novalytic (one capsule morning and evening), Lactoferrin (one capsule a day) and Toxin Mobilization Binder (two capsules in the evening). In practice that means on waking, before breakfast, or two or more hours after a meal.

4. Form matters as much as dose

How much of an ingredient your body can use depends on its form. Three examples from the research:

InsuLess is a liquid taken under the tongue: shake the bottle, place 5 drops under your tongue, hold for 60 seconds. Do this 3 to 4 times a day, best before meals.

5. Add one product at a time

If you are starting more than one supplement, introduce them a few days apart. You will know how each one suits you, and it is easier to spot anything that does not agree with you. Check for shared ingredients when you combine formulas: Quercefit®, for example, is in Novalytic, InsuLess and Liberate, and ashwagandha in both Liberate and Wellness Essentials. Each label’s own daily dose still applies.

6. Anchor it to habits you already have

  • Keep morning capsules next to the kettle and evening ones by your toothbrush.
  • Use a weekly pill organiser, or set two phone reminders.
  • Take InsuLess before meals you already eat at regular times.
  • Put the start date on each bottle so you know when to re-order: most of our bottles last 30 days at the labelled dose.

7. Give it time, and review

Take a routine consistently for several weeks before judging it, and note how you feel in a simple diary. Review your routine every few months, and whenever your health, diet or medicines change.

8. Know when to ask first

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor before starting supplements if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take regular medicines (especially blood thinners, blood-pressure or blood-sugar medicines), have a medical condition, or are preparing for surgery. Keep supplements out of the reach of children.
